Ben had plenty of power but was very gentle with his stock with a naturally steady pace. He was an excellent dog at lambing time where he showed patience with the lambs but stood his ground with the ewes.   Ben was stylish when he choose to be, but often was bored with only a few sheep or with dog broke sheep. Ben was the first dog I trained to open level and his trialing achievements were seriously curtailed by my inexperience and his bad hips but he is still the most intelligent worker I have ever interacted with. Among the many things i have to thank him for is bringing Raven and I together. After retiring early from trials he worked on the farm till his hips made it impossible. We lost Benny on May 24 2009, he watched Joe Kidd run in a trial using Ben's whistles on hair sheep and working not at all like Joe (but just like Ben). An hour or so later we helped Benny put the pain in his hips permeantly behind him, a few hours after that we learned that Joe (or perhaps Ben) had won the trial.

If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come -- please let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve -- it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years;
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.
