The Arrival of Color March 16- March 23
(red)
SoJo - A tiny little girl,
midnight black, very lively and forward, was born late last night, so although
Ian woke me to tell me about her, i didn't get to see her until i did
first-light lamb check this morning. i had found a new lamb in the pasture and
was bringing him in with his mama, when i heard a very determined little baa
coming from the lambing jug (small pen where the new lambies and their mamas
stay for a few days) next to Woodrow and Barack's home. and there she was! she
plainly has a strong spirit so i named her Sojourner Truth (SoJo for short). you
go, girl!

Cúchulainn - the
young lad i was bringing in is a St. Patrick's Day lambie, named after the
Celtic warrior hero Cúchulainn, "A handsome lad was he that stood there,
Cúchulainn son of Sualtam." and a handsome lad he is, worthy of a heroic name.
(p.s. if any of the lambie names intrigue you, i strongly encourage you to
Google them and learn more about their stories, especially these latest two!)

Pat and Mike - two more
St. Paddy's day boys just joined their cousin Cúchulainn. from the heroic to the
trite: we're calling these two fine young lads Pat & Mike. may the wind always
be at their backs! The picture was taken very soon after their birth the yellowy
orange color on Pat is birth fluid not yet cleaned up by his mother.

Pint and Half-Pint - last
year we added two gorgeous new shetland ram lambs to our flock, one deep brown
named Guinness and the other a lighter brown named Harp. we just got the first
of Harp's babies, little twins. the boy is bigger, so his name is pint (and who
wouldn't like a pint of Harp?), and his smaller sister is (wait for it...)
Half-Pint.

Dia and Noche - this
morning at first-light lambie check, i saw a new white girl lambie in the dark
barn, very tiny with the shetland-adorable face that looks like a disney cartoon
character. when i got closer, i could see extra feet behind the mom -- another
baby girl, this one all black! both are impossibly cute. their names are Dia and
Noche, spanish for Day and Night. let's see now, which one should be which?

Edmund - we almost got
to see EDMUND being born. his mom was in labor and we were keeping an eye on
her. it seemed as if she were in a resting phase so we went up to the barn for
just a moment, and when we looked back, there he was! just hit the ground and
was already standing and exploring around, a little brave shetland boy. he seems
destined for grand adventures, so he's named after the late Sir Edmund Hillary
(who did NOT say "because it's there" ... that was George Mallory!).
Edmund is the first pure Shetland of the year.

Butters - this adorable
little guy started out named Frosty because there was a hard frost the night
he was born and the mamas-in-waiting were all outside rather than in the barn. in honor of the
circumstances of his debut, and since his black fleece is speckled with white, i
thought Frosty was an appropriate name for him, and he does seem to be a jolly
happy soul, but when i got to know him i changed it to Butters. he's amazingly
friendly and people-positive, trots over to have his head scratched and get
petted. last night i discovered that if i put my hand in his pen with my palm
flat and facing him, he rears back and charges and BUTTS my hand as hard as he
can, as if he were a full-grown ram! it's just hilarious! i dasn't encourage him
or i'll be in big trouble when he gets bigger, but it's just so damn cute and
funny i can't help it!

TOLJA SO - we're in the
truck heading to town to the feed store, and as always i'm scanning the ewes in
the OB/GYN pasture. "i think i see a lamb out there!" "nah, you're
hallucinating. you always see lambs." all right, i know i tend toward lambatory
hallucinations this time of year, but i really did think i saw one this time.
off to the feed store, and on the way back i was SURE i saw a lambie out there,
so i set off across the muddy sodden pasture for a closer look, and sure enough
there was a little white boy (yes ANOTHER boy!). "tolja so!" Actually the mother
is jsut a yearling and was in a different pasture.

Evangeline - we have
a girl! and a big strong one at that, with beautiful white markings on her head
and shoulders. Evangeline ("of the Maritimes") arrived first thing this very wet
rainy morning, and was snuggled up beside her mama in a sheltered corner of the
OB/GYN pasture. they both seemed quite pleased at moving to the warm dry barn.
