Curly - For many weeks
I've been counting down to the day our lambies were scheduled to start arriving,
march 20th (the Vernal Equinox). today, with 23 days to go, young Curly made his
appearance much to our surprise and delight! i'm just positive that his dad is
Crazy Horse, last year's precocious and unique first lamb, now Leader of His
People. Crazy Horse was romancing the neighbor ladies when he was still in the
field with the other lambs and ewes late last summer... and Curly has all of his
dad's self-assurance and presence. the Oglala war chief Crazy Horse was named
Curly until he was 11 years old and fought his first battle, so it seemed right
that this Crazy Horse's son should be named Curly too. no telling what his
grown-up name might be!

Hop and Skip - bright
and early this morning, two more Crazy Horse sons arrived to start our day off
delightfully! the twins look just like smaller versions of Curly -- Crazy
Horse's boys seem to favor very fluffy faces and wooly little chaps. since they
were born on leap day, i named them Hop (brown markings) and Skip (black
markings), names i'm sure they'll live up to once they get a day or two older
and start getting the lambie skippies. so nice that Curly will have friends to
play with, lambies just LOVE playmates!
DOB: February 29, aprox. 6 am Sire: Crazy Horse, Ewe: O67
(3:3M,0F) Hop- Both shoulders, Skip - between shoulders and between hips
Gus - i heard him talking
this morning before i saw him. i'd been checking the fields with binoculars
since first light, looking for new lambies in the cold rainy morning, but
finding none. finally i gave up and started out to bring in the newspapers, and
heard lambie baaing coming from the nearest pasture. sure enough, there he was,
another Crazy Horse boy looking just like his half brothers! since he started
out making such a racket and hasn't quit talking since, i named him after one of
my all-time heroes: Augustus McCrae. if you haven't read "Lonseome Dove" ... do.

Sonny and Moon Pie -
Crazy Horse is definitely working on creating a nation of sons for himself. this
afternoon on our way back from checking the new lambies in the barn, Ian spied a
lamb with its mom on the far side of the pasture. as we got closer, i could see
that it was two lambies, not one, and... that's right! both boys! since these
are the first babies born into the sunshine instead of in the early dawn hours,
one is named Sonny and the other is Moon Pie. their mom's milk isn't in yet, so
for now we're feeding them with eyedroppers, using cups of milk borrowed from
Mrs. McCrae next door.

Woodrow - Yesterday
Augustus McCrae arrived on our farm and everyone knows that Gus needs Woodrow
Call to be his partner and foil and devil's advocate. When this little guy
showed up in just before midnight with a swagger all his own (and with two ewes
wanting to be his mom i might add) , he just had to be named Woodrow. we can't
wait to see how they get along when they grow up, "rangering" together in the
fields! (due to his getting a mild case of pneumonia Woodrow has become a
bottle baby)

James Brown - what's that
i see out in the field this morning? could it be another lambie? indeed! as i
walked out to greet him (of course it's ANOTHER "him"!) and his very skittish
mama, i asked "how you doing, little guy?" and he let out the loudest lambie
yell so far! sounded to me like he was saying "I FEEL GOOD!" so i named him
James Brown. now we have eight lambies, all boys. one more and they can start
their own baseball team: "are you baaing? there's no baaing in baseball!"

Gladys and Pip - we
have GIRLS at last! Crazy Horse's Nation of Sons is now integrated, with the
birth just around midnight of twin girls. they harmonize most melodiously as
they baa for food, so i call them Gladys and Pip. mom has no milk for them yet,
they're eye-dropper babies for now. Gladys is a hearty eater, hope she teaches
Pip to be the same! (Pip is the one on he left with the droopy ears)
DOB: March 4, aprox.11 pm Sire: Crazy Horse, Ewe:

Barack - after all
those whitebread boys (and two girls!), we finally have a Lamb of Color! Barack
was born late in the afternoon while Ian was out feeding the ewes, so we got to
see him take his first shaky little steps. he's all black and just gorgeous,
very fluffy, always hungry, and the VOICE on him! wow! when he wants his milk,
he wants it NOW and lets us know in no uncertain terms! i'm sure he's saying
"Yes we ca-a-a-a-a-an!" i see a great future for him as an orator
extraordinaire. (due to his mother not producing enough milk Barack has become a
bottle baby)

Ghoulie and Ghostie -
i've been rooting for another Crazy Horse lamb, so his nation would have an even
dozen; Ian has been lobbying against NO more lambs until the 20th, when the
lambies were **supposed** to start arriving. but when i got home from work
today, Ian took me out to the barn to see... new twin boys! they're either late
Crazy Horse sons or early non-Crazy Horse lambs... hard to say, absent a
paternity suit. they have VERY long gangly legs, so i named them Ghoulie and
Ghostie, from the old prayer "From ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggedy
beasties and things that go bump in the night, dear lord deliver us!" gimme that
old time religion!
DOB: March 10, aprox.noon Sire: Crazy Horse, Ewe:

Mickey and Minnie -
twins chose to arrive this morning just as i was getting ready to leave for the
j-o-b, but i have my priorities in order -- i can always make up j-o-b time,
lambies come first! a boy and a girl, our first mixed twins of the year so far.
they were squeaking all the way to the barn, so they are now Mickey and Minnie.
(we lost Minnie on March 12, she apparently got stepped on and injured and was
not nursing)
DOB: March 11, aprox.8 am Sire: Crazy Horse, Ewe:

Muriel - a BIG baby
girl greeted me first thing this morning, she was so new her mama had just begun
cleaning her. what a great way to start the day! i'd offered to name a lamb for
my good friend James, a terrific artist who does murals (among many other types
of art); he felt "James" was too plain a name for a lambie, so i named this big
girl for his mural art, Muriel.
