THE NAMING OF THE LAMBS 2008

Every year at "Meet the Lambs Day"  (this year it is Saturday April 12 from 10 am to 4 pm) people see the signs with the lambs' names, breeds and date of birth and ask about the names,  who names them, what the origin of the names are etc. Well it is Raven who names them, and the stories behind then are a wide and varied as the names themselves.  So with no further preamble here is "The Naming of The Lambs".

This is page 5 of the Naming of the Lambs, don't forget the earlier lambs:

Eve & Andy - two new lambies at first-light check this morning, teensy black shetlands, cuter than a bunny's butt! the first one i checked was of course a BOY -- we've been getting all black shetland **boys** so far this year, and it's black girlies we want! but the other is a girl, YAY!!!!! i named her Eve, 'cos i knew EVE-entually we'd get a black girl! :-) couldn't stand to name her brother adam, ho-hum. so i call him AnD (pronounced Andy), which stands for Another Dude.

Amos - Amos was born about an hour after Eve and AnD this morning. his fleece is beautiful black with white speckles, and i was hoping he'd be a girl, but... sigh. anyway, he's a cutie. since he's so close in age to AnD, how could i not call him Amos? holy mackerel!!!
DOB:
April 6, 7:30 am Sire: Guiness, Ewe: G22 (58:34M,24F)

Kingfish - we had one new lambie last night, black and white speckled, ANOTHER BOY dammit, but he's so cute i can't begrudge him his gender. he looks almost exactly like Amos, so to complete the theme of Amos and AnD, i named him the Kingfish.
DOB:
April 7, 7:30 pm Sire: Guiness, Ewe: G35 (59:35M,24F)

Flicker - my favorite sheep, Flea, just had her baby! i saw every second of it, she was so good! i was going "push, honey, push!" and coach-breathing "hee-hee-hee hoo!" and then POP! out he came! she is being such a wonderful mama, i just knew she would be. they're in the barn right now getting to know each other. he's SO CUTE! i named him Flicker.
DOB:
April 9, 3 pm Sire: Guiness, Ewe: G33 Flea(60:36M,24F)

Tiny Tim - this little guy was having trouble standing on all four feet when we first met; three worked fiine, but his left back foot dragged and curled under, making it difficult for him to stand and nurse from his mama. i named him Tiny Tim, and it seems to be improving nicely the more he uses it. "god bless us, every lamb!"
DOB:
April 10, noon Sire: Guiness, Ewe: S178(61:37M,24F)

Marie and Katie - girls at last! twin white misses greeted me first thing this frosty morning. their mama was ready to be very protective, but the girls were quite outspoken and made their opinions plain -- they were happy to go to the barn. in honor of their having the courage of their convictions and not being afraid to make them known, i call them Marie and Katie, The Dixie Chicks (sorry Eva...).
DOB:
April 11, aprox 6:00 am Sire: Guiness, Ewe: G18(63:37M,26F)

Diva Maggie - a sweet little all-black girl, is named for a dear friend of mine, a wonderful Border Collie belonging to my friends Randy and Jean-Marc, who lived in california when we first met and moved to france a few years ago. Diva Maggie, their beautiful all-black girl, died not long ago, and when this little girl arrived, i knew she was meant to carry on a proud name.
DOB: April 11, aprox 4:00 pm Sire: Guiness, Ewe: G20BooBoo(64:37M,27F)

Eggshell and Ecru - my youngest sister is very INTO fashion and colors, and she likes to tease me for my total lack of sophistication in such areas. in her honor, i have named these two girls whom i would ordinarily call "white" lambies Eggshell and Ecru.  i hope i got that right! Ecru is the one with some very light brown color in her fleece.
DOB: April 11,
7:30 pm Sire: Guiness, Ewe: G6Holly(66:37M,29F)

Samba and Tango - ChaCha, one of our sweetest shetland mamas, had twin girls early this afternoon! maintaining my Dance Party naming for her lambies (last year her son was Disco Stu), these two are Samba (the nearly all black one) and Tango (the white and black speckled one). both are tiny and adorable, of course, and ChaCha seems relieved to have had them the day AFTER all the Meet the Lambs Day activity!
DOB: April 13,12:30 pm Sire: Guiness, Ewe: G8ChaCha(68:37M,31F)

Meester - Me has finally had her lambie! her previous babies were named Me Too and Me Tutu. this frisky little one is a white ram lamb, so i named him Meester.
DOB: April 14, aprox 10 am Sire: Harp, Ewe: O90Me(69:38M,31F)

Seņor - born just about the same time was another single shetland ram lamb, mostly black, his name is Seņor. That brings our Shetland count to 12 boys and 10 girls with just one Shetland ewe still to lamb.

Sire: Guiness, Ewe: G27(70:39M,31F)

Scratchy - remember the promo line from the movie "jaws" -- "just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water again..."? the shepherd's version of this must be "just when you thought it was safe to stop checking for new lambies..." we really did think we were done for the year. wronnnnggggg. Ian found this little guy out with the yearlings, his mom another schizy teenage bride of Itchy Brother, the ram formerly known as thought-he-was-a-wether. oh well... welcome to the world, Scratchy!
DOB: April 16, Sire: Itchy, Ewe: G(71:40M,31F)
