Naming of the Lambs 2011

Every year at "Meet the Lambs Day" people see the signs with the lambs' names, breeds and date of birth and ask about the names, who names them, what the origin of the names are etc. Well it is Raven who names them, and the stories behind then are a wide and varied as the names themselves. This also doubles as our lamb log so it also includes items such as paint and tag. Tag refers to the sheeps identifying ear tags, the letter denotes the color of the tag, we usually add these to the lambs at about 3 months of age. Paint refers to the washable paint we add to lambs and ewes to identify who belongs to whom.

The most current lambs are shown on this page older lambs are shown on the pages listed below

  Yin & Yang
we were on our way to town to run some errands when we saw these two out in the field, newly born, so we pulled a quick uey and went back to bring them in.  the boy, YANG, is all black except for a little white spot on  his forehead, the girl, YIN, is all white with a tiny black nose. they're just perfect, but they have their colors reversed, Yin usually being black and representing female energies, and Yang being white and representing male energies. i hope i haven't confused them hopelessly for the rest of their lives with this!

PipSqueak
PIPSQUEAK will probably turn the tables on me and grow up to be a big strong heavy-duty ram some day, but this morning when i found him he was small and wet and crying piteously for his mama, who wanted nothing to do with him. they are in a little lambing jug (pen) now and she seems to be realizing that she has a nice young son who needs her and wants lots of that good mama's milk.

Wacker
WACKER was waiting for me when i went out to do first lambie check this morning. she was already dry and fluffy and full of energy, nursing from her mama and ready for action. i named her for another of my sisters, Gail aka Wacker, because she seems smart and adventurous. happy birthday, Wak!

 Partly Cloudy
PARTLY CLOUDY was a big surprise to us. her mom was not in with the expectant ewes, but was way out in the back field with the year-old girls. we're guessing one of the rams did a little extracurricular
excursion when he wasn't supposed to. still, she had a beautiful big strong girl, who was born on a partly cloudy day and is colored in a sort of partly cloudy pattern. in oregon, "partly cloudy" is about as good as a weather forecast gets at this time of year, so her name is a happy one.

Two Tone
TWO TONE's name was a no-brainer, all you have to do is look at his marvelous coloring! when i was in high school, back in the mid-Pleistocene Era, all the guys we considered to be wicked cool (when in fact they were likely just wicked) had two-tone cars that they cherished and showed off and bragged about. guess i still have a vestigial soft spot for two-tones.

Antsi and Bitsy
ANTSY and BITSY (full names Anthracite and Bituminous) were born in the wee small hours of the morning. when i got up to do the 4am check i found a note from Ian telling me that there was a new lambie in the barn, but i found not one new lambie but two! Bitsy, the girl, was the one Ian had met; her brother Antsy evidently came along between Ian's last check and my first one! they both looked black to me in the dark barn, hence their coaly names, but in daylight we could see that one is really a beautiful deep brown. maybe i should have named her Clean Coal?

Ol' Yeller
OL' YELLER got his name for two reasons. when i found him freshly born out in the field with his mama, he was still covered in the yellowish birth fluid that the mamas lick off in time, he looked like a black and yellow lambie rather than the black and white boy he is. then all the way back to the barn, as i carried him and his mama trailed behind us,  he yelled at the top of his voice. quite a set of lungs on this lad!

Annie Laurie
ANNIE LAURIE is a mostly-Scottie girl, beautifully marked like a Scottie lambie with black markings on snowy white wool.  even though we already have a Laurie lambie, i can't resist naming a Scottie girl Annie Laurie.

Justice Kloppenberg
JUSTICE KLOPPENBURG is a lot of name for a little lambie to carry, but she seems strong, brave and adventurous, just like her namesake. JoAnne Kloppenburg, a strong, brave and adventurous Democrat just waged a heroic campaign for a seat on the Wisconsin supreme court, and if justice prevails (pun intended) she'll take her place on the bench soon. this girl's for you, JoAnne! i'm proud of you!
