Naming of the Lambs 2011

Every year at "Meet the Lambs Day" people see the signs with the lambs' names, breeds and date of birth and ask about the names, who names them, what the origin of the names are etc. Well it is Raven who names them, and the stories behind then are a wide and varied as the names themselves. This also doubles as our lamb log so it also includes items such as paint and tag. Tag refers to the sheeps identifying ear tags, the letter denotes the color of the tag, we usually add these to the lambs at about 3 months of age. Paint refers to the washable paint we add to lambs and ewes to identify who belongs to whom.

The lambs are shown on the pages listed below

Miss Judy
on friday night we received a very sad phone call from a dear friend telling us that he'd lost his wife of 49 years. Judy was a lovely woman with a sharp wit and amazing talents, we'll truly miss her. i decided to name the next girl lambie in her honor, and sure enough, when i went out to do dawn lambie check there she was, a beautiful little all-white girl, Miss Judy (to those of you old enough to remember "Romper Room" that may ring a bell, too...). our friend is coming to visit tomorrow, i hope he'll be pleased to meet his Judy's namesake.

Isis

what i thought was going to be a quiet morning was interrupted by Ian running in the house to tell me that Hawk had disappeared and that there was a new lamb way out in the field! i geared up and ran out, found young Hawk sound asleep beside the haystack hiding under a tarp, and went out to help bring the new lambie in. she sure was out in the field, her mom had managed to get all the way on the other side of the Nile, the irrigation ditch that bisects our farm! since the Nile seemed to be this new little girl's designated queendom, i called her Isis. (and did Hawk ever get a lecture from his mama when i put him back in with her! "don't you EVER do that again, like to scared me half to death!" etc.)

Joe Hill and Woodie Guthrie
in our exhaustion, we were sort of hoping for a day off today, but no such thing. just as we sat down to lunch we saw a ewe going into labor, and by the time we'd finished a quick lunch, she had produced twin boys! in honor of her labor, and of the battles for union rights in so many states including my own home state Wisconsin, i named these two guys Joe Hill and Woodie Guthrie. i'm pretty sure they were baaing along with me as we carried them to the barn and i was croaking
(horribly off-key) "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night."

Athena
the last two lambs of our six-lambie day came very late in the evening, as Ian was doing last lambie check. i was already asleep when he came in with the news that we had two more new babies! both have strong Scottie heritage as you can see by their moms. Athena is strong and wise, a very independent little girl who knows her own mind, and is named for the Greek goddess of wisdom, war, and crafts (an interesting combination!).

Younger Horse
for a wonderful end to such a lamb-filled day, a big strong son was born to my namesake, Me, and my hero sheep of all time, Crazy Horse. i couldn't be prouder of him if i'd actually  had something to do with his creation! His name is Younger Horse, in credit to his awesome dad, the Sheep of Sheeps, like whom there is no other. big hoofprints to fill, youngster!

A La Mode
next we found A La Mode and her mama hiding out in the farthest corner of the maternity ward pasture! she is a frisky and sprightly little girl, part shetland and sure looks it with that little pixie face and big eyes! she's a beautiful shiny black, but that white swirl atop her little fluffy head gave her her name.

Laurie, her brother Lary and her Other Brother Lary
We began the day with triplets that we first thought to be twins, two boys, Lary and My Other Brother Lary (named after our wonderful artist friend Lary McKee -- do yourself a favor and visit his website, www.larymckee.com!). then we found the little girl, Laurie, trying to nurse on a ewe who hadn't lambed yet, and we knew we had triplets! I had promised our friend Lary that we'd name this spring's first white boy lambie after him, but since i'm not sure which of these two boys came first, i called them both Lary  just to be sure. Laurie is so little and pretty that i named her after my sister Laurie, who is also both.

Minnehaha
our second lambie this spring, a little white girl born this morning. we were about  half convinced that she was going to have a sibling, since she was quite small and her mama is a big girl. we checked several times, but no little brother or sister for her. so i named her Minnehaha -- Minne because she's such a mini lambie, and Haha because she fooled us, turning out to be a solo act instead of a twin. she's got a big voice and a mind of her own already!

 Hawk
he's here! the first lambie of 2011 just arrived, a day before we expected him but what a sweet surprise! he was an hour or so old before Ian spotted him, he saw a ewe standing all by herself in a far corner of the pasture, and when he went to see if she was all right... voila! there was her little fluffy baby standing next to her. isn't he sweet?
i named him Hawk, since he's so black and beautiful and i've been rereading all of the Robert B. Parker "Spenser" books. lot of name for a little lambie to live up to, but he's off to a good start. now then: more, please!
