Naming of the Lambs 2011

Every year at "Meet the Lambs Day" people see the signs with the lambs' names, breeds and date of birth and ask about the names, who names them, what the origin of the names are etc. Well it is Raven who names them, and the stories behind then are a wide and varied as the names themselves. This also doubles as our lamb log so it also includes items such as paint and tag. Tag refers to the sheeps identifying ear tags, the letter denotes the color of the tag, we usually add these to the lambs at about 3 months of age. Paint refers to the washable paint we add to lambs and ewes to identify who belongs to whom.

The lambs are shown on the pages listed below

Cumulus
CUMULUS was named entirely for her looks. she is THE whitest, fluffiest lambie that i've ever seen. every time i see a fluffy white cloud in the sky from now on i'm going to think of her. of course, i
confess that after i named her, i scurried stealthily back to the house to look up the names of the three major cloud types -- didn't want to embarrass myself by calling her the wrong name. fortunately, i got it right and didn't have to change her name.

Bunny & Rabbit
BUNNY and RABBIT were born first thing on april first. as i'm sure many of you know, it's an old superstition that the first thing you say on the first day of each month should be "rabbits, rabbits!" to ensure good luck during the rest of that month. i didn't want to call them both Rabbit, so i named the girl Bunny.
DOB:

Dot & Two Dot
DOT and TWO DOT are pretty little twins with a few identifying spots. the girl has a pair of dots on her shoulders, and since one of my favorite places (okay, one of about 17,000...) back home in sweet
Montany is a little town called Two Dot, i named her after it. her brother, who has one bigger spot, thus bears the girly name of Dot. live with it, son, it'll make you stronger!
DOB:
March 31, aprox 9 pm Sire: Jehovah, Ewe: O139  (24:9M,15F) Paint: Green butt tags: dot-s208, twodot-orange 204
Boyd Crowder
this absolutely beautifully marked guy originally had the hairs on his head sticking up every whichaway, looked so cute, so i named him BOYD CROWDER. now his hair has calmed down some, but he still seems a lad of many complexities and strange twists of character, so the name sticks.  (suggestion: if you aren't watching "Justified," you oughta take a look!)

Sunshine
first lambie of the day showed up early this morning -- we didn't even see her at first, hiding down amongst her mama and the other big sheep. but when i first picked her up, i saw a tiny ray of sunshine peek through the clouds, such a welcome sight after all the cold rains we've been having! so in recognition of that and as a good omen, her name is Sunshine.

Fanny
Ian spotted one ewe with a new lambie and another one just going into labor. he took off for the newborn, while i attended to the laboring ewe. she was having a hard time of it, when i caught up to the ewe (luckily she has horns, so i had a handle to hold), i saw feet dangling out the back door... but not front feet as it should be, back feet! oh no! with instinct and not much else as my guide, i held the mom as steady as i could and tried to feel around to see if the lambie would come out all right with a little help. at that point the little feet had gone still, so i helped as much as i could, pulling gently by her hips, and out she came, a wet unbreathing mess. a few chest compressions got her breathing, thank goodness, and now she's a happy healthy girl! i named her... Fanny!
DOB:
March 28, aprox 1 pm Sire: Enrico Jr, Ewe: W124  (20:7M,13F)
Unfortunately despite our best efforts we lost Fanny a few days later

Tina Turner
beautiful black girl with gorgeous long legs, so her name is Tina Turner.
DOB:
March 28, aprox 1 pm Sire: Enrico Jr, Ewe: small black cori  (20:7M,13F) Paint: Blue left shoulder tag: orange 212 - check

P.S.

Born late in the evening i didn't even get to meet her until the following morning, when i named her P.S.  i believe that i hear her mama singing "P.S., I Love You" to her, but i'm told it's my imagination.
DOB:

Giraffe

born about the same time as fly the difference in size between our biggest sheep (the corridales) and smallest sheep (the shetlands) was never more evidient than with this big long-legged girl called Giraffe
DOB:
March 27, aprox 2 pm Sire: Jehovah, Ewe: White Cori  (18:7M,11F) Paint: Blue both betweens tag: orange 201

Fly
Fly's mom is my favorite ewe ever, lovely little Shetland Flea. her babies always look and act just like her: weapons-grade cute and impossibly affectionate.
DOB:
March 27, aprox 1:30 pm Sire: Keith Olberman, Ewe: G33 (Flea)  (17:7M,10F) Paint: Blue between shoulders tag: green 82
Rainman & Weathergirl
Rainman arrived first, at the start of one of the daily downpours. we got totally sopping wet bringing him and his mom in from a far corner of the "maternity ward" field. then, as we were giving him his first shots and getting him settled, i noticed his  mom licking as a wet bundle of something... she had given birth to his twin sister, Weathergirl, and it was so quick and easy that we didn't even notice -- guess all those LaMaze lessons paid off.
DOB:

 Blackberry & iPod
first born in the early morning were two big girls, all-black Blackberry and her white-dappled sister iPod. i don't usually name one lamb because of another's name, but i couldn't resist this one.
DOB:
March 27, aprox 8 am Sire: Enrico Jr, Ewe: Large black Cori  (14:6M,8F) Paint: Blue Left hip tags: balckberry-orange 214, ipod-orange 213
