Herding with the Nevada Gang

February 3-9 2005 I was invited to do a clinic in Nevada by Sandy Moore and the rest of the "Nevada Gang".  I was a bit skeptical about doing a whole week but as it tuned out it was a great experience.  I think everyone had a good time, me included, and getting to work with a group of people and dogs consistently for a week was very educational not just for the attendees but for me as well.  Below are some photos taken by Gloria Atwater during the clinic.

Here I am working with Tuney, a son of one of the nicest working Aussies (Sage) I have ever seen. Sage is the mother of several other dogs that were in the clinic and the breeding shows.  If you look beyond the orange fence you can also see the snow that had to be cleared from the arena for the clinic.
One of the things I emphasize is the building of a good relationship between handler and dog based on mutual trust and respect. Here I am making friends with a Corgi that participated in the test day on Sunday.
Sandy Moore was the host of the clinic, an excellent trainer in her own right.  Here we are working with her young Border Collie named Joker. The mountains in the background separate us from Lake Tahoe.
Again during test day on Sunday I am working here with a Canaan Dog.  Different coloring than you usually see in these dogs (I believe this one is an import) and this one was quite good.
With Gloria and her dog Jesse we are working here on getting the dog to take off balance flanks and to come around to our side of the sheep in order to start driving.
This is Belgian Malinois River owned by Sue Haase (who kindly let me stay in her motor home while at the clinic).  Sue and I are working on Rivers driving skills.  This dog made a lot of progress in her understanding of driving during the clinic such that at the end of the clinic she was driving well out in open fields.
This is Tuney again this time working with D'Lila his owner as I stand nearby to offer advice and step in and help if needed.  Tuney is a very high drive dog who needs his handler to be as sharp and quick as he is.
Speeding around behind her owner is Isabelle, a Shetland Sheepdog.  We are working here on getting her to widening her out as she goes around the sheep.  Like many dogs early in their training Isabelle wants to work to close and to fast.
I usually take one or more of my own dogs, or dogs I have in for training, along when I travel to clinics.  I can then use these dogs to demonstrate certain concepts.  This series of pictures was taken as I demonstrated teaching the shed with my dog Joe (who did not know how to shed before the clinic).
